The short answer

Istanbul's Galataport is right in the city, and the T1 tram takes you to the old city in about 15 minutes. Hagia Sophia costs €25 for foreign visitors and Topkapı about 2,750 lira with the Harem. Crowds and lines are the big issue, so pick two or three sights.

Your day, hour by hour

Planned for a typical call. Check your ship's all-aboard time and be back an hour early. The ship will not wait.

  1. Walk to Tophane and take the T1 tram to Sultanahmet.
  2. Hagia Sophia first, as early as possible.
  3. Blue Mosque (avoid prayer times).
  4. Basilica Cistern or Topkapı (choose based on time).
  5. Lunch near Sultanahmet.
  6. Tram back by 2 hours before all-aboard. Traffic and crowds make Istanbul slow.
Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Long lines at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı.
  • Heavy traffic for taxis.
  • Pickpockets in crowds and on trams.
  • Carpet-shop 'friendly guides'.
  • Dress codes at mosques.

Do this

  • Carry a scarf for mosques.
  • Ignore strangers who offer to 'help' you skip lines.
  • Lira prices change often; check on the day.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • US citizens with ordinary passports can visit Türkiye without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (announced 2024; EY tax alert). Check the State Department before you go.
  • Hagia Sophia €25 for foreigners.
  • Mosque dress code: cover shoulders and knees; women cover hair.

Accessibility

Galataport is modern and step-free. The old city has hills and cobbles. The tram is low-floor (unverified at every stop).

Money

Turkish lira (TL). Many ticket offices charge in lira or by Visa/Mastercard; at Ephesus euro and dollar cash are not accepted at the ticket office (secondary source). Shops and taxis in tourist areas often take euros or dollars, but at a worse rate. Use an ATM inside a bank. Amex is often not accepted.
