The short answer

Ålesund is an easy port: you dock about 200 m from the town center. The whole town was rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire in 1904. Climb or ride up Mount Aksla for the classic view.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Rain and wind are common.
  • The 418 steps are hard on knees.

Do this

  • A full-day Geiranger tour from Ålesund is long; check timing if your ship visits only Ålesund.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Ships use shore power where available.
  • Norway has no cruise passenger tax in 2026. A national fee of NOK 100 per passenger per 24 hours in port is proposed from January 1, 2027, if approved (reported by The Local Norway, March 2026). Norway's separate local tourist tax of up to 3% applies to hotel stays, not cruise passengers.

Accessibility

Docks in town; center is fairly flat. Take a taxi to the viewpoint instead of the steps.

Money

Norwegian krone (NOK). Cards (tap-to-pay) are accepted almost everywhere, even for small amounts. You rarely need cash. Tell your bank you are traveling.
