The short answer

Catania docks next to its baroque center, but its two big draws are a long way off. The only public bus to Etna leaves Catania at 8:15 am and comes back down at 4:30 pm, taking about 2 hours each way, so Etna needs a ship tour or a private driver. Taormina is about 80-90 minutes by Interbus.

  3. 8:30 Coach to Taormina (about 1.5 hours).
  4. 10:00-13:00 Greek Theatre, Corso Umberto, public gardens; lunch.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Etna by public bus does not fit an 8-hour call (8:15 out, 4:30 back).
  • Etna weather: it can be cold and windy at the top even in summer; bring a jacket.
  • Etna eruptions can close upper areas at short notice.
  • Traffic on the road to Taormina.
  • Italy has frequent announced transport strikes (trains, buses, ferries), often on Fridays. Check the Italian Ministry of Transport strike list (scioperi.mit.gov.it) the week before your port day.

Do this

  • Pick one: Etna or Taormina.
  • Bring a jacket and closed shoes for Etna.
  • Try arancini and granita in Catania.
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • On Etna's upper slopes, hiking requires a guide (Wikivoyage).

Accessibility

Catania's center is fairly flat but has lava-stone paving. Taormina is hilly. Etna's crater area is rough volcanic ground.

Money

Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside or at a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks.
