The short answer

Cruise ships arrive at Gate 4 of the commercial port, about 6 km from the centre, and you cannot walk out. On ship days a free port shuttle runs 9 am-5 pm every 30 minutes; cruise lines also sell their own shuttles; RTM buses 35 and 35T run from the cruise port exit toward La Joliette; taxis cost about 20 euros. RTM brought in new fares on Nov 1, 2026. Notre-Dame de la Garde sits on a steep hill; take a bus or the little tourist train up.

Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • France has periodic national strikes that can cut train (SNCF/TER) and bus service. Check the news and the transit operator's site a few days before.
  • Steep climb to Notre-Dame de la Garde.
  • Pickpockets around the Old Port and Saint-Charles station.
  • Mistral wind can be strong and cold.

Do this

  • Tourist office: 11 La Canebiere, open daily 9:00 am-6:00 pm (closed Dec 25 and Jan 1).
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • Modest dress inside the basilica.

Accessibility

The Old Port is flat. Le Panier and Notre-Dame have steep slopes. Buses with low floors are common (not verified).

Money

Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks.
