Portofino / Santa Margherita Ligure

The short answer

This is a tender port: boats bring you to Santa Margherita, and Portofino is 5 km away by ferry, bus 782 or a coastal walk. Portofino is tiny and expensive, so pair it with Santa Margherita or the boat to San Fruttuoso. Tenders stop if the sea is rough.

Where Portofino / Santa Margherita Ligure lies

Where your ship docks

Ships anchor in the Gulf of Tigullio and tender passengers ashore, usually to Santa Margherita Ligure; small ships may tender straight into Portofino's tiny harbor. Your ship's daily program names the landing point.

Shuttle. Tender boats are free and run by the ship. No land shuttle needed in Santa Margherita.

A day ashore

Your day, hour by hour

Planned for a typical call. Check your ship's all-aboard time and be back an hour early. The ship will not wait.

  1. 8:30 Tender to Santa Margherita (expect a wait for a tender ticket).
  2. 9:00 Ferry or bus 782 to Portofino.
  3. 9:30 Portofino harbor; walk up to Castello Brown and the lighthouse.
  4. 11:30 Ferry to San Fruttuoso (if running) or back to Santa Margherita.
  5. 13:30 Lunch in Santa Margherita (cheaper than Portofino).
  6. 14:30 Stroll the seafront.
  7. 15:00 Join the tender line; be back on board at least 1 hour before all-aboard. The last tender often fills up.
Wise counsel

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

Beware

  • Tender port: rough seas can stop tenders or ferries.
  • Portofino is tiny and very crowded at midday in summer.
  • Very high prices in Portofino (Wikivoyage reports 7-euro soft drinks and 7-euro cover charges).
  • Narrow road; buses and taxis get stuck in traffic.
  • Italy has frequent announced transport strikes (trains, buses, ferries), often on Fridays. Check the Italian Ministry of Transport strike list (scioperi.mit.gov.it) the week before your port day.

Do this

  • Have lunch in Santa Margherita, not Portofino.
  • If the sea is rough, take bus 782 instead of the ferry.
  • Trains from Santa Margherita-Portofino station reach Genoa in about 30-45 minutes (Wikivoyage).
Practical matters

Fees, money and access

Rules & fees

  • No cruise visitor caps confirmed (see unverified).

Accessibility

Difficult: tender boats need steps and a ship-crew hand; Portofino's lanes and the castle path are steep and cobbled. The seafronts of both towns are mostly flat.

Money

Euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard work in most shops, restaurants and museums; tap-to-pay is common. Carry 20-40 euros in cash for small cafes, toilets, markets and some buses. Use a bank ATM (inside or at a bank) and always choose to be charged in euros, not dollars, when a card machine or ATM asks. Bring extra cash for Portofino restaurant cover charges.
